Opening notes
Óbidos
Óbidos
has the great pleasure and honor to host this so unusual
exhibit wishing that this Country will always play prominent role
in the decentralization and promotion of Culture.
My special tribute to the outstanding mathematicians and authors of this
exhibit, that I will have the pleasure to welcome personally, stating by this
way my utmost admiration to their creativity.
José António Pereira
Júnior
Mayor of Óbidos
SPM
The Portuguese Mathematical Society
(SPM), in the framework of the activities of the World Mathematical Year
2000, is honoured to associate itself with the exhibition of Mathematics
and Digital Art "Beyond the Third Dimension". This initiative will
certainly contribute to the improvement of the public visibility of
Mathematics and to the diffusion of the relations between this science
and the new technologies.
The SPM is grateful to the town of Óbidos for the welcome of this itinerant
exhibit in its beginning, as well as the scientific meeting "The Practice
of Mathematics in Portugal", that will take place during that exhibition at
Óbidos.
Ana Bela Cruzeiro
President of the Portuguese Mathematical Society
Universidade da Madeira
Dimension is one of the basic concepts of mathematics. Mathematicians
use it almost everyday and yet, for the public at large, it remains a
big mystery. To be able to show, through an event like this one, what
"exists" in dimensions bigger than 3, and that such things can be
beautiful is a rare opportunity. It provides us with the opportunity of
showing that mathematics is fun too. In fact, reputedly, mathematics is
a difficult subject and not a very popular one in our schools. To change
this state of things has not been easy but it is certain that attractive
and beautiful exhibitions like this one will prove to be essential.
For the youngest public university in Portugal, during the World
Mathematical Year, it was thus obvious that it should participate in
this event, and bring to all the possibility of an extraordinary voyage
Beyond The Third Dimsnsion.

CMAF / Universidade de Lisboa
The Centro de Matemática e Aplicações Fundamentais (CMAF), of the
University of Lisbon, as a complement of its role of scientific research
unit with a quarter of century lifetime, participates at the World
Mathematical Year with an initiative in the popularization and
communication of the mathematical sciences, the
"Projecto Matemática em Acção"
In this framework, the CMAF promotes this exhibition of high visual
quality with the colaboration and support of several entities, in
particular, its authors, Professors T. Banchoff and D. Cervone,
to whom expresses here its recognition. Among several objectives, this
exhibition aims to stimulate the imagination and rouse the curiosity of
young people and the general public, by showing the potential of new
information technologies and computational geometry through a
fascinating experience that relates mathematics, art and computer
graphics.
On behalf of CMAF, it is our pleasure to thank the town of Obidos in
the persons of its mayor Mr. José António Pereira Júnior, its Town
Councillor responsable for the Culture, Tourism, Patrimony, Social
Welfare and Sports, Mrs. Maria Helena Correia, and its Municipal Deputy,
Mrs. Isabel de Noronha.
